Dr. Laureen Cota is a Board-Certified Podiatrist with the American Board of Podiatric Medicine and have over two decades of experience specializing in wound care and limb preservation. After completing a rigorous 3-year Residency in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, she dedicated her career to treating complex wounds and preventing limb loss, particularly in patients with diabetes and vascular disease.
For the past 20 years, she has worked extensively in a dedicated wound care clinic, where she developed deep expertise in managing chronic, non-healing wounds using advanced modalities. Her clinical focus is on comprehensive wound evaluation, aggressive treatment of infections, and proactive care planning to promote healing and reduce hospitalizations.
In addition to her outpatient practice, Dr. Cota serves as a surgeon at Abrazo Central Campus Hospital, where she cares for patients with serious and infected wounds who require inpatient management and surgical intervention. Her approach emphasizes multidisciplinary collaboration and a patient-centered philosophy with the goal of improving outcomes and preserving mobility.
Limb salvage is not just a specialty—it is her passion. She is deeply committed to helping patients maintain independence and avoid amputations through timely intervention and individualized treatment strategies.
Originally from San Diego, California, she brings a West Coast perspective to her practice, combined with years of hands-on experience and a strong dedication to clinical excellence in podiatric medicine and surgical wound care.
Dr. Cota is deeply committed to patient-centered care, focusing on comfort, convenience, and consistent healing outcomes. Understanding how difficult and time-consuming it can be for patients—especially those with mobility issues or chronic wounds—to travel to a clinic, Dr. Cota offers a convenient mobile wound care service.
She visits patients weekly, treating them right where they are, whether at home, in assisted living, or long-term care facilities. Patients appreciate the personalized attention and the ability to receive expert care without the added stress of transportation. At the heart of her practice is a simple belief: healing should come to you.
Placental allografts contain natural growth factors and extracellular matrix components that help jump-start and accelerate the healing process, especially in chronic wounds that have stalled in the inflammatory phase.
These grafts have powerful anti-inflammatory properties that help calm excessive inflammation, which is a common barrier in chronic wound healing. Reduced inflammation also typically leads to decreased pain for the patient.
The amniotic membrane naturally contains antimicrobial proteins and peptides that help reduce the risk of infection, creating a safer wound healing environment without relying solely on antibiotics.
Placental allografts provide a scaffold for cell migration and new tissue growth, promoting the regeneration of skin and soft tissue in difficult-to-heal wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, and pressure sores.
Because the placental tissue is immune-privileged and processed to remove cells that could trigger an immune response, the risk of rejection is extremely low, making it safe for most patients.
Available in multiple forms—membranes, flowable gels, or powders—placental allografts are easy to apply in outpatient, inpatient, or surgical settings. Their flexibility allows clinicians to treat a wide range of wound types and sizes.
Thanks to their anti-fibrotic properties, placental allografts can help reduce excessive scar tissue formation, resulting in better cosmetic and functional outcomes in wound healing.
When medically necessary and properly documented, many placental allograft treatments are covered by Medicare and commercial insurance, helping reduce the financial burden for both patients and providers.
